Does Wearing a Hat Cause Hair Loss?

Must read

You love accessorizing with hats. They complete your overall look as well as keep your face from being touched excessively by the sun’s UV rays which can cause premature aging. However, you are worried because you might have heard somewhere that wearing hats could lead to hair thinning.

So does putting on hats can cause hair loss? The simple answer is no. However, it is possible for the use of hats to lead to hair loss, provided that certain conditions are met.

There are a handful of reasons behind hair loss. They include:

  • Genetics. If hair loss runs in the family, then you better brace yourself for the future.
  • Hormonal issues. Imbalance in your hormones can actually cause the shedding of hair.
  • Stress. Leading a very stressful life? Then you are at risk of hair
  • Certain drugs or treatments. It’s normal for some drugs or treatments to cause hair loss as a side effect.
  • An illness. Being ill can in fact cause you to shed more hair strands than normal.

Speaking of shedding hair strands, experts say that it is perfectly fine for you to lose 50 to 100 strands of hair a day. It is perhaps for this reason why some people assume that wearing hats can trigger hair loss — they get to see lots of hair strands in their hats after removing them. But this does not necessarily mean that accessorizing with hats is the culprit; it can only mean that it’s a normal incident involving the hair.

However, it is very much possible for hat wearing to lead to hair loss. It’s all due to some of the other possible reasons for hair loss that can be linked to the use of hats in the wrong fashion. Take a look at the following:

  • Hair damage and breakage can lead to hair thinning. It’s for this reason why you should refrain from wearing hats for hours on end. From time to time, remove your hat and allow your hair and scalp to “breathe”.
  • You can lose hair by opting for tight hairstyles such as cornrows or ponytails. The same problem can happen if you like wearing hats that are simply too tight for you. The solution is for you to invest in hats that properly fit your head.
  • Fungal infections can also contribute to hair loss. Because of this, make sure that you clean your hats from time to time. Otherwise, microbial growth in them may cause scalp irritation and infection, leading to hair loss.
