Tips on How to Prevent Dry and Chapped Lips

Must read

Most of us are focused on moisturizing our face and skin, but we often forget that our lips need some TLC too. It doesn’t matter what the season may be, whether it is summer or winter, the temperatures can leave our lips dry and cracked. The summer sun can burn our lips leaving it in need of more moisture, and when the winter season arrives, the cold temperature can also rob our lips of its much-needed moisture. Add to the fact that we tend to forget to take care of our lips, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that you are constantly dealing with chapped lips.

Although most of us rely on lip balms to keep our lips plump and looking great, there are other steps to take to keep your lips looking great regardless of the season. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Exfoliate

One of the tips on how you can prevent dry and chapped lips is to exfoliate your lips. You can take advantage of lip exfoliators sold in stores or make your own lip scrub with honey and sugar. Honey is a natural humectant while the coarseness of sugar helps get rid of the dead skin that lie on the surface of your lips.

Use almond oil

Another tip that you can use to prevent chapped lips is to apply almond oil on your lips. What’s great about this oil is that it acts as a hypoallergenic moisturizer that it can even be used on your baby’s sensitive skin. The presence of vitamins A and E helps protect your lips from damage and inflammation too. If you want to enhance the absorption rate of the oil, pop it in your microwave and warm it up for a few seconds before applying.

Coconut oil helps too

Aside from almond oil, you can also use coconut oil to help moisturize your lips. This oil is packed with saturated fats that have both antimicrobial and disinfectant properties that can help protect your lips from damage. Warm the coconut oil before applying on your lips to help prevent dry and chapped lips.

Avoid picking at your lips

There are times when our lips feel dry and chapped which can be quite annoying especially when you’re applying lipstick. But if you tend to peel off the skin, you are inviting more bacteria to take place in your lips which can only worsen the problem. The best way to avoid this issue is to avoid peeling your chapped lips, and just apply lip balm after exfoliating to help lock in the moisture.
