This is good news for everyone. Researchers at the Queen’s University Ionic Liquid Laboratories, or QUILL Research Centre, have developed a new perfume that smells better when a person sweat. The perfume releases more of its fragrance when it comes into contact with moisture.
How do this perfume works?
This innovative perfume system was created by tagging a raw fragrance into salt, in the form of liquid or ionic liquid, which has no smell. The ‘perfumed ionic liquid’ releases its aroma when it comes into contact with moisture or water, allowing more of the perfume’s scent to be released onto an individual’s skin.
Furthermore, the perfume system also has the ability to remove the bad odours that come from sweat. The ‘thiol’ compounds, attached themselves into the ionic liquid, therefore losing their potency. The ‘thiol’ compounds are responsible for the malodour of sweat. In short this perfume, acts as a deodorant as well.
The project leader of the project Dr. Nimal Gunaratne, are considering this research an exciting breakthrough with the use of ionic liquid systems to release material in a controlled manner. It not only has a good commercial potential that could be used in cosmetic creams and perfumes, but it could also be used in other fields of science, like the slow release of certain substances of interest.
The result of the research was published in the Chemical Communications Journal. The scientists who conducted the research are currently working with a perfume company to come up with products that are to be sold to consumers.
