It has been said that our eyes are the windows to our soul but it can get pretty fogged up because of eye strain that leads to blurred vision, dry eyes, and tension headaches even. This is quite common nowadays when our eyes are doing a lot of work especially since we are using our computers most of the time at work and at home plus our smartphones. It’s no wonder that many of us have eye problems! Of course, we have other habits that are putting a lot of strain on our eyes too, we just don’t know it. Here are a few that you should know of.
Using old prescription glasses
Most of us are not really fond of wearing eyeglasses or even have them regularly checked because of our busy schedule or because of laziness. Whatever your reason is for not changing your glasses, it is important that you should break this habit as using old prescription eye wear is not doing your eyes any good. As a matter of fact, it is adding more to your digital eye strain. Make it a habit to switch to glasses that are for computer use if the bulk of your day is staring at your computer screen.
Reading on your smartphone
Another bad habit that we really need to break is reading on our smartphone. The tiny screen and even smaller texts can put a lot of stress on our eyes. And since most of us are glued to our phones, our poor eyes are getting the brunt of the work hence they feel tired and a slight throbbing begins at the back of our eyes or at our temples. If you are going to read in digital format, it is much better to go for a tablet that has a larger screen so you can enlarge the text. If it is not possible, take a break and give your eyes time to rest.
Excessive lighting
The lighting in your desk or in your bedroom can also take a toll on your eyes especially when working. Too much light, plus the light coming from your computer screen, can be tiring to your eyes. It is important that you have adequate lighting where you can still see your computer keyboard with ease but not to the point that you are blinding yourself because of too much light.
Rubbing your eyes
It is understandable that you would want to rub your eyes when they become tired but you need to keep in mind that rubbing your eyes too hard can actually break the vessels there which can exacerbate the problem. A better option to soothe your tired eyes is to use a cold compress instead as this will help alleviate the issue.
Sitting on a bad chair
You may not think about it this much but the type of chair that you are using can also strain your eyes. It is important that your chair has adequate back support so you will be able to sit back so you won’t be leaning towards your computer which can add tension to your back, shoulders, and neck which can add to your tired eyes.
Not following a healthy diet
Most of us are not really following a healthy diet these days which can actually make your eyes deteriorate at a faster rate. You see, our eyes need essential vitamins and minerals for them to be healthy and eating processed foods time and time again is not a great way to make this happen.
