How to Make Sesame Seed Milk (And Reasons to Drink It)

Must read

There are so many non-dairy alternatives to cow’s milk that are perfect for anyone who is a vegetarian, intolerant to lactose or simply trying to cut back on their daily intake of saturated fat and cholesterol. However, not all people who are steering clear of cow’s milk can go for just about any plant-based milk option. For instance, those who are allergic to nuts cannot take the likes of cashew, almond and hazelnut milk.

Luckily, there are also non-dairy milk products that are not obtained from nuts, and one of the most popular examples around is sesame seed milk that offers a number of health benefits.

If you are someone who is into DIY projects, then this article is for you. That’s because it will teach you how to make sesame seed milk from scratch, right in your own kitchen. Also, later on in this article you will learn some of the reasons why it is a good idea to consume sesame seed milk.

Here are the steps to follow if you want to come up with a liter of homemade sesame seed milk:

About 3 to 4 hours before you whip up sesame seed milk from scratch, allow 1 1/2 cups of sesame seeds to soak in a bowl of water. Make sure that everything is below water level. Place the bowl in a cool and dry place in your kitchen. Feel free to put a plate on top of it to keep dirt and insects at bay.

Drain sesame seeds and transfer to a blender. Add 3 cups of distilled water.

Blend on high for about 2 to 3 minutes or until smooth.

Grab a large piece of cheesecloth and fold in the middle. Fold again another time to make sure that no small bits of sesame seeds will make it through. Place cheesecloth in a bowl large enough to accommodate about a liter of fluid. The edges of the cheesecloth should be sitting outside of the bowl.

Carefully, pour the contents of the blender into the bowl lined with cheesecloth.

Gather the edges of the cheesecloth and twist them. Using your clean hands, squeeze out as much of the remaining water in the sesame seeds as you can.

Give the blender a quick rinse in the sink and transfer extracted sesame seed milk to it. Add 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract or 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla powder. Add 1 teaspoon of maple syrup or honey, and also a pinch of salt. Blend all of the ingredients on high for about a minute.

Transfer to a pitcher and keep in the refrigerator. Consume within a week.
